She sees a Black activist offer to pay for the seats on the flight and insists on flying first class.
The activist requests that Malcolm X’s widow be treated as “royalty”; Seberg seems attracted to the passenger, who identifies as Hakim Jamal, a member of the Black Panther Party (BPP).
When Seberg arrives in the United States, he observes a group of Black activists demonstrating at the airport, expressing their dissatisfaction with the treatment Jamal and his traveling companions got on the journey.
She joins the demonstrators and raises her fist in a solidarity Black power salute. FBI agents, including Jack Solomon, are working secretly at the airport, unbeknownst to her.
Due to her alleged involvement with the Black Power movement, the FBI shadows her actions while she is in the United States and arranges for her phone calls to be taped at Solomon’s request.
