The musician completed her high school at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts before going on to study classical theatre at the North Carolina School of the Arts. The program was led by director Gerald Freedman, and she remained with the program for a year before attending the Tisch School of the Arts to study acting. Despite all the distractions, her heart was fully set on becoming a musician, and she pursued her interests upon graduating from college.

A young Jesse who was living in New York at the time would have never met Hemky had it not been for fate.
