Gaal was a naturalized Hungarian citizen who practiced Roman Catholicism. Her full name was Franciska Silberspitz, and her zodiac sign was Aquarius.

Her parents’ names were Regina Pfeifer and Lipót Silberspitz. She was the 13th and final child of a Jewish family.

In terms of education, Gaal attended the Stage Academy in Budapest in 1919 and began acting in the city’s theaters by 1920.

Career and Professional Life

Gaal made her feature film debut in Máté Gazda és a törpék (1919). She was trained as a singer by Joe Pasternak and went on to become a popular stage and cabaret performer in Central Europe during the 1920s and 1930s.

Furthermore, she made her first film appearances in Hungarian silent films in the early 1920s, but her career didn’t take off until sound came along. Gaal, on the other hand, came to Hollywood to star in Cecil B. DeMille.

After appearing in several films in Hungary and Germany, she appeared in De Mille’s epic adventure film The Buccaneer (1938), opposite Fredric March. Following this, she directed the 1938 comedy The Girl Downstairs, a remake of her Austrian hit Catherine the Last.

In 1939, Gaal co-starred with Bing Crosby in the musical Paris Honeymoon. She returned to Hungary in 1940 due to her mother’s illness and stayed for the duration of World War II.

In 1946, she began work on a new film, the Soviet-backed Renee XIV, in Budapest with Johannes Heesters and Theo Lingen, but production was halted and the film was never completed.

She returned to the United States in 1947 with her Budapest-born attorney husband Francis de Dajkovich (who died in 1965), but her presence in Hollywood was minimal. She took over for Eva Gabor in the Broadway production of The Happy Time in 1951.
