A convicted Italian mafia boss Edgardo Greco who evaded authorities for 16 years, has been arrested. He was working as a pizza chef under a fake identity.

The 63-year-old is believed to belong to the notorious ‘Ndrangheta, a powerful mafia organization in Calabria, southern Italy.

Police found him working as a pizza maker with a different identity. Local newspapers have even featured his fake identity as “an authentic Italian pizza maker.”

According to French prosecutors, Edgardo Greco had previously operated an Italian restaurant under an alias. Interpol said in a statement that he was arrested on 2 February 2023 while working as a pizza chef in France.

Edgardo Greco reportedly went on the run in 2006. There was no trace of the convicted killer until the mid-2010s.

In 2014, Edgardo settled in Saint-Etienne and began involving in the restaurant business. In 2021, he became the owner of Caffe Rossini Ristorante, an Italian restaurant.

He operated the restaurant until November same year. According to documents obtained by Agence France-Presse, he served in other Italian restaurants in the city under the name Paolo Dimitrio.

A Facebook account for the Caffe Rossini Ristorante reportedly showed that a local news outlet covered its opening in 2021. But the account appears to have been deleted now.

Furthermore, Greco also worked evenings at a pizzeria using a false name.

According to the prosecution, the investigating magistrate in Lyon formally informed the mafia boss of Italy’s arrest warrant after his early-morning arrest. He is now in detention.

Italy and France’s investigators received assistance to capture Greco from the cooperation against ‘The Ndrangheta project (I-Can) operated by Interpol, which promotes Police cooperation between its 195 member states.

According to the military Police of Italy, the carabinieri, tracing Greco’s network of supporters, brought investigators to Saint-Etienne. Interpol and the French Police survived the convicted killer, which sent in Italian Police to arrest him.

Edgardo Greco Was Sentenced To Life In Prison In

Italian court gave a life sentence to Edgardo Greco, who is also described as a dangerous fugitive, for the murders of Stefano and Giuseppe Bartolomeo.

According to Italian detectives, the Bartolomeo brothers died in a fish warehouse in January 1991 after they were beaten with iron bars. As their bodies were never discovered, official believes that they have been dissolved in acid.

He was also on the wanted list for the attempted murder of Emiliano Mosciaro – another mobster. He reportedly attempted to kill Mosciaro during a mafia war between the Pino Sena and Perna Pranno groups in the early 1990s.

As mentioned above, Edgardo Greco belongs to Italy’s most extensive and powerful mafia group, ‘Ndrangheta.

The group operated on a global scale and had close contact with the trafficking of cocaine coming from South America to Europe.

More than fifty people have already been investigated for a series of crimes.

Last month, Italian Police officers caught one of the most notorious criminal Sicilian Cosa Nostra boss Matteo Messina Denaro. After over 30 years on the run, he was caught at a Cancer clinic in Palermo on 16 January.

In a statement, Interpol secretary general Jurgen Stock said, “No matter how hard criminals try to live a quiet life abroad, they can’t evade justice forever.”
